The city of Naperville was founded in 1831, two years before Chicago. Captain Joseph Naper and his brother John were the first settlers, building a sawmill on the river banks. It is the oldest city in DuPage County. The community was incorporated in 1857, and became a city in 1890.
It is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, both in residential and business expansion. It is a high-tech community, but maintains its image as a “quaint” hometown despite its research and development centers. RecreationaL opportunities are plentiful and the Naperville 1,200-acre park district has received awards for its outstanding programs and facilities. There are three golf courses in Naperville, and one miniature course. As well, there are two live theaters. Naper Settlement is a 12 acre, 19th century living museum with 24 historic structures. Centennial Beach is a water-filled quarry for community activities. It encompasses 6 acres with the water-filled quarry, a sand playground, a volleyball area, a bathhouse, and 4 acres of greenery and trees.
Naperville has 43 different shopping areas, including a large downtown district. The Naperville Park District houses the old Kroehler Furniture Factory, restored and renamed 5th Avenue Station. It is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It includes specialty shops, restaurants, and offices. The Riverwalk is a very popular location for both residents and visitors. It is a beautiful linear park, near the downtown business district, featuring distinctive landscaping, lighting, covered bridges, water fountains, and miles of lovely brick pathways.
Elementary school children attend district 203 and 204 schools, while high school students attend classes in district 203 (Naperville Central and Naperville North) or 204 (Waubonsie Valley High School).
Naperville is 28 miles west of the Loop. The East-West Tollway (1-88) is a direct access to Chicago, taking about an hour. Train commuters reach the Loop in about 45 minutes. O’Hare Airport is 45 minutes away by car, while Midway Airport is a 35 minute drive.
