We are facing a critical decision on a referendum for much needed repairs and upgrades to Hinsdale South and Central.

I don’t get how anyone with an understanding of the issues and financial needs can be opposed. I know there are people who have limited understanding of the issues. Those are well meaning people who unfortunately make decisions at the polls based on emotion.

Some of the referendum opponents are simply CAVE dwellers (Citizens Against Virtually Everything). I don’t understand why the leaders against this referendum are dedicating their time, effort and a lot of financial resources to oppose something that can only help property values.

Many of them attended Central or South; most had children who went there. Perhaps they have unpleasant memories from their own experiences and revenge is the motivator. They are filled with hatred and want to destroy these great schools.

Hinsdale South has enrollment of 35 percent of the District 86 total. Residents living within South boundaries account for 37 percent of total district tax revenue, but 43 percent of the proposed referendum will be spent on improvements to South. How can they call that unfair to Hinsdale South?

Residents of Downers Grove, Naperville, La Grange and other neighboring suburbs look at what is happening in District 86 and wonder how this could happen in an area that was once the envy of all surrounding towns. They feel sorry for us. We have so much at stake. How could anyone be opposed?

I just don’t get it.
